Taking the original and upping the ante on stunts and cinematography

Memories of an 80's or early 90's cult classic can often cloud your judgment when a reboot or remake comes on to the scene. I have to be honest with myself, the original isn't a work of art and it doesn't age well. After recently watching the 1991 version, it was obvious that my memory of the movie was way better than the actual thing. While the campiness and bad acting might have worked when I was a young teenager, it now feels like a self-parody.

Let's jump to present day. It's apparent from the opening scene that the new version of "Point Break" is trying to have it's own identity. The motocross scene immediately grabs hold of you and squeezes till your left breathless when they make their jump of the cliff. Knowing that this is REAL stunt work and not special effects is what really makes this a fun action movie. It's the same reason why we watch Jackie Chan movies because we know he's putting himself on the line in his fight and stunt sequences. People often compare fight sequences as a dance / art. I believe that it's the same for surfing, motocross, snowboarding and wing suit flying. And the great cinematography really amplify those moments in the film. 

When it comes to the story, I expected as much as an action movie was going to give. I will say that the new version of Point Break tries to create layers that were not in the original film. But the bar is low enough that practically anything is an improvement from the original storyline. But regardless, it kept me interested since I already knew how the movie was going to end. The journey was slightly different for the characters so it was fun watching a new take on it.

As for the acting, they aren't trying to reinvent Reeves or Swayze. While that is a good thing, it also has it's drawbacks. Perhaps because I am now "grown up", I don't care for the campiness and less-than-stellar acting of the original. The new faces in this version of the movie do a good job but they don't have the same dynamic or charisma as Reeves or Swayze. But what they do establish a thousand times better is their kinship. The bro-love of the original feels paper thin but in the new movie feels organic and realistic. 

Overall, this is supposed to be a fun movie to sit down with your popcorn and just go along for the ride. I don't want it to be the original "Point Break" but I'm not expecting Citizen Kane. It's an action movie that entertains. Watching the stunt sequences alone was worth the price of admission. When I'm watching a movie like this, I want to say, "Whoa" out loud during action sequences and this movie does not disappoint.

For the inexperienced, 'Spooks' (or MI5 because the Yanks say) was a British TV program targeted around MI5 spies (nicknamed Spooks and primarily country NSA). Be below no illusions: this does not have blind loyalty, missing super-weapons or a suave well-defined hero. And whereas Kit Harington is that the handsome lead star, the particular star is none aside from long-time veteran Peter Firth.

With each new film they release, Marvel outdo themselves time after time, from 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' to 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' and now to this amazing and irreverent superhero blockbuster packed full of humour and action in a visually stunning galaxy. Previous Marvel films have tried too hard to place humour in situations that didn't require it, 'Guardians of the Galaxy' however employs it frequently and due to the constant stream of jokes it works perfectly. Chris Pratt is by far one of Marvel's best casting choices since Robert Downey Jr. as 'Iron Man', even beyond this the other acting bodies were cast perfectly. The visual effects are utterly stunning and the battle scenes are epic, 'Guardians' is a truly amazing and thrilling superhero flick full of visual splendour.

Its like watching a B-movie Syfy channel film, but with some named TV actors in it. Parts of it are okay, but then you have a cutaway to the guy in the van which is just stupid. He should have called for help, and where are the police who should have gone looking for their officer, and the chemistry teacher that got stupider, and the writer thinking about his book during the attack. What could have been good was ruined by stupid characters. 

Then the kids start doing stupid stuff, but then pretend to be normal? The gates are locked but then just open. The kids cut the phone lines but how? 

Its not funny enough to be a comedy, its got lots of gore but is too stupid to be a horror. Its like they didn't know what it was and so it failed at everything. It also looks and feels like it was shot on gopro cameras and there is a sound echo problem near the start. Its stuff like that which shows how much care was put into the production.

Yes, it's full clichés. The storyline is simple. But.... Tell me one disaster flick that is not full of clichés and has a decent storyline. In this regard this movie is second to none. Who's looking for a Fight Club or a Donnie Darko here? It's pure entertainment. And, it's truly great in it's own category and genre. I'm telling you that as a European guy who's pretty highly educated, visits real, brick and mortar theaters often and watches movies with intricate plots. Dwayne's character implies something our society as a whole has already lost: real respect for women from the bottom of his heart. The CGI is just perfect, the cutting is absolutely professional, and if Deep Impact received such a critical acclaim from professional reviewers, this movie deserves more. Much more.

Superficial Spectacle.

3/10 just for Gyllenhaal - burdened with a paper thin character and script overwrought with so many clichés it borders on plagiarism - who managed to breathe the smallest amount of life into this "feature" film.

I can understand the hype, with a new track from Eminem and Hollywood darling's McAdams, Gyllenhaal, & Whitaker, bloody spit takes, and convincing eye make up - what could go wrong? The catch is it's completely superficial. Too often we mistake glitzy effects and name branding for quality. Southpaw exemplifies this to a fault. We are guided to believe the walking plot points are characters, that the dialogue is remotely passable (the commentators laughably bad), most of all that we see a portrayal of poverty, addiction, or isolation behind the gloves. But we never get there.

In fact we never see the hard streets of new york - save for transition shots and an exterior of Will's Gym. We never see Hope's spiraling inebriation following his wife's passing - just a news headline and a silly crash sequence that comes out of the blue. We get cuts and montages the imply his falling apart, but alas it is a spectacle we never see. Save for a one off apartment scene and a character so thinly written he wasn't given a real name (Hoppy), the only poverty we experience is through hackneyed dialogue about growing up in the foster care system. In truth 80% of the movie is in the ring, locker room, or gym.

This movie relies so heavily on Gyllenhaal's performance that it's insulting. Insulting that today a name and some make up is enough to paint an otherwise vapid and lackluster production as a masterpiece. And I wanted to love this movie so badly as a massive fan of boxing movies.

I was surprised to hear this movie was coming to the big screen considering how disappointing the last outing Jurassic Park 3 was. My recommendation is that if you haven't seen any of the original 3 movies (unlikely but possible ?) don't be tempted to now, watch this and it will be all the more enjoyable, well they say ignorance is bliss ! Of course you probably have seen the original and best film from 1993 and even the still very enjoyable JP2 of 1997 which this film compares favourably to. It is leaps and bounds better than JP3 of 2001 which was inevitable because that film was scraping the barrel for ideas. The CGI has improved quite a bit and that is where the money has been spent I guess (another £100 000 000 film !) with the added bonus of 3D which I thought was really good. OK the story is obviously predictable , we aren't expecting all the dinosaurs to stay in their pens and behave themselves are we !? The newish ideas come in the form that we have trained the dinos to be more entertaining a bit like sea-world and for that extra wow factor that is of course needed we have a new chimera of a dinosaur in Indominus-rex a real badass monster who inevitably runs amok. There are some funny and romantic moments dropped in here and there and of course the baddies in the background with their own agendas for the dinosaurs. Chris Pratt shows us again how entertaining he can be as the action hero and will obviously be doing more comedy action in future. BD Wong is again the scientist from the original 1993 film, it would have been nice to see Sam Neil but you can't have everything ,maybe JP3 scared him or should I say scarred him ? Anyway ,if you want to see an action packed entertaining big blockbuster of a movie go and see Mad Max Fury Road, if you want to see an entertaining action movie about dinosaurs , Jurassic World is a good option.
